The University of Limerick is an independent university established by the Government of Ireland in 1972. It is located in Ireland's National Technology Park on the banks of the river Shannon near Limerick City (population 80,000). It is a young, energetic and enterprising university with a proud record of innovation in education and excellence in research and scholarship. Total student enrolment in 2007/8 was 10, 600 students.
UL offers a range of programmes in Architecture, Business, Education, Engineering, Humanities, IT, Languages, Law, Medicine, Music and Science up to doctorate and post doctorate levels in the four faculties of the University: Kemmy Business School, Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Education and Health Sciences and the Faculty of Science and Engineering. UL enjoys a truly outstanding physical setting, located on the banks of the River Shannon at the heart of the 640-acre National Technological Park, approximately 3 miles from the centre of Limerick city, and 20 miles from Shannon International Airport. Outstanding recreational, cultural and sporting facilities and state of the art on-campus accommodation further enhance this exceptional learning and working environment.

UL offers over 66 four-year primary degree programmes. The academic year runs from September to May and intending students may apply directly to UL. A unique feature of academic life at UL is the Cooperative Education Programme (undergraduate work placement) which involves placement of all full-time students in employment relevant to their academic interests for a minimum of seven months. UL offers programmes in education and research to masters and doctorate level in the following areas: Business, Computing, Education, Engineering, Humanities, Mathematics, Music and Dance, Science and Social Sciences. As part of the University’s overall research strategy, a number of areas have been prioritised for academic excellence and relevance to industry and society. These are:

- Materials and Surface Science
- Work, Productivity and Quality
- Humanities and Social Sciences

UL offer English Language programmes for undergraduate and postgraduate students. These programmes are designed for students who need to improve their English language and study skills in order to enter a degree programme at UL or another English-speaking university. The Language Centre offers an 11-week, 22-week or 33-week Preparation for University Course and a 4-week English for Academic Purposes course.
